Ms. Murphy is the founder of The Ortega Murphy Law Firm, PLLC, an Immigration and Family Law Practice. She pursued her legal education at The Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law School at Touro College part-time while holding down a full-time job as flight attendant for a major airline, on the weekends. Additionally, during law school, Ms. Murphy worked for several Major New York City law firms holding several positions which gave her a thorough understanding of the legal process and practice areas she would work as an attorney.
Her legal experience includes working for an immigration law firm, where her duties included meeting with clients at Federal Detention Centers, Jails and Deportation Offices where she learned how to navigate the immigration bureaucratic system.
She also interned with the New York City Police Department, where she became adept at negotiating settlements between her department and individuals whose property had been confiscated in connection with a crime. She worked as a legal translator for several NY Government agencies and for the Legal Aid Society.
This professional experience has taught her to ensure that her clients’ immigration status is always considered and protected to the greatest extent possible in the event they are the subject of criminal charges. Attorney's who practice exclusively in criminal law may not be aware of how immigration and criminal law affect one another.
At Touro Law School, she was competitively selected to join the Family Law Clinic where she successfully represented battered women, obtaining restraining orders and avoiding deportation proceedings. She also enrolled in an internship program with Community Mediation Services as a part of the New York City Family Court Mediation Program gaining experience with difficult and often emotionally-charged child visitation arrangements.
It is Ms. Murphy’s real world experience, biculturalism and growing up with the responsibility of translating for her family at a young age that allowed her to adapt to the Hispanic and American cultures. She understands her client's cultural needs and how certain legal issues may have a unique impact on them. She is a dedicated advocate for her predominantly Hispanic clientele while they strive to attain the American Dream.
Ms. Murphy knows that her clients’ work schedules are usually not regular business hours and works exclusively by appointment. In addition to quality legal services she has reasonable affordable rates and, for convenience, accepts most major credit cards.
